Recording Booth

The public Vinylograph works like an photo booth, except that instead of instant photos, it produces records. You simply enter the recording booth, press the start button, and speak, sing, shout, or whisper whatever you want to hear on the recording. The Vinylograph cuts the sound onto vinyl, live and in real-time, and then dispenses the finished 7’’ single.

The Public Vinylograph

The public Vinylograph is a freely accessible mini-studio where audio recordings of up to three minutes can be directly cut onto vinyl. The result is an individual audio work of art that captures a snapshot of Vienna’s vibrant urban life, including the sounds of the surrounding area. The Vinylograph’s large window also allows viewers outside to watch and experience the entire recording process live.

The Vinylograph is the only public machine worldwide that can cut records without the need for audio technology or a production company. We have updated the design and technology to modern standards and now aim to make our machine available to all of the city’s residents and visitors. As a participatory public art piece, the Vinylograph makes analog sound recording easily accessible to everyone.
